Trying to keep Wordle going in a minute or less – as we reach the end of our opening word sequence from Theodore Roosevelt’s “The Man in the Arena”

32 Comments

  1. Was incredibly lucky to get this one on the first try!!! Sometimes it can't get any better than this

  2. Got stuck on this for a long time because I assumed it couldn't be past tense.

  3. Mark’s opening word streak in full:

    WHERE DEEDS COULD ARENA WHOSE SWEAT BLOOD COMES SHORT AGAIN ERROR KNOWS GREAT CAUSE WORST FAILS LEAST WHILE PLACE SHALL NEVER THOSE TIMID SOULS

    Theme: The 5-letter words from “The Man in the Arena”, a passage by Theodore Roosevelt

    According to the description, that’s the end of the word streak! Maybe there will be a TEDDY as an epilogue, like how the Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening streak ended with FROST, but I don’t know

  4. Ended my streak on this one. 4 wrong attempts at the _RO_E structure

  5. I got very lucky and got it in three :

    ⬜️🟩⬜️⬜️🟩 PRIDE
    ⬜️🟩⬜️🟩🟩 GRAZE
    🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩 FROZE

  6. 4 guesses for me
    Music -> Plant -> Fjord -> Froze

  7. I think at least 3 of my first 5 guesses were past wordle answers. If I had any kind of memory retention it would have taken a lot fewer guesses.
    ⬜⬜🟩⬜🟩CHOKE
    ⬜🟩🟩⬜🟩DRONE
    ⬜🟩🟩⬜🟩TROPE
    ⬜🟩🟩⬜🟩BROME
    ⬜🟩🟩⬜🟩GROVE
    🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩FROZE

  8. This one took me forever to figure out. In my head I couldn't really imagine there'd be a Z in 4th so froze took a long time to even consider as an option

  9. This is the closest I've been to breaking my streak in a very long time.
    SMILE – TRACE – BROKE – PRONE – GROVE – FROZE

  10. SOULS-TROMP-FROND-FROCK-FROZE. I’ll give SHAME a try next, as that is the next 5-letter word in the quote. Maybe Mark will change his mind and include the final sentence: “Shame on the man of cultivated taste who lets refinement to develop in to fastidiousness that unfits him for doing the rough work of a work day world.”

  11. SPARE -> FORGE -> FROZE (I got a bit lucky there… 😅)

  12. FROZE is an example of the CCVCV pattern. It is the fourth most frequent pattern of consonants and vowels found in the set of all valid Wordle solutions. Out of 2315 solutions, 212 words follow this pattern (Source: Josh Bernoff's Wordle Solution Explorer).

  13. Lost my 84 day streak on this one (hard mode). Had R, O, and E on the second try and in the right place on the third. There were just so many possible combinations with those.

  14. Why do I feel like Mark would almost want a six to avoid the dreaded five?!😂

  15. Negative information was key in keeping this from being harder! I was also worried about hard mode heck until I realized that there was nothing left in my possibilities except F that could go before an R in second, and that made FROZE jump off the keyboard! Thanks, Mark, for these daily treats!

  16. CHAOS -> BLOKE -> PRONE -> TROVE -> FROZE

    Definitely struggled with some HMH on this one.

  17. Lost my streak with this one, got stuck in hard mode.

  18. I got it by avoiding crone which blew my streak a week ago. Bit sneaky running that pattern so soon.

  19. SMOUT–>PHONY–>GROWL–>CROAK–>ERODE–>FROZE I had no yellow letters and still only got it in 6. I had the O right from the start.

  20. INDEX>GAUGE>PROSE>TROVE>FROZE

    Wow, almost everyone had hard time with it.

  21. he got it! i did not, it killed my (tiny) streak, i didn't get the 'ro' in the right place in time and was left with too many options

  22. Congrats on not being upset with 5! Well done, Mark!!

  23. POSER then hard mode hell to fail – DRONE CROME GROVE WROTE BROKE

  24. Brutal. Bru. Tal. I did get it in 5 but I admit a bit of dictionary-grepping on the way, and it wasn't anywhere close to a minute either: SHIRT, CRUMB, PRONG, DROLL, FROZE. Wonder why this was so hard?
